Automotive and Spare Parts
México is a producer of high quality and innovation vehicles. Vehicles made in Mexico meet high standards and are commercialized in the most demanding and competitive markets worldwide.
In 2013, the terminal automotive industry increased in three relevant areas: domestic market, exports, and production. During the mentioned year the terminal automotive sector and the spare parts sector represented 2.6% of the national GDP and 15.0% of the Mexican manufacturers GDP.
The United States is still the main export market for Mexican automobiles and buses. Nevertheless, vehicles produced in Mexico are exported to several destinations. Latin America has increased its participation as a destination of Mexican exports in the last years.
Baja California has two assembly plants (Original Equipment Manufacturer, OEM) established in its territory:
- The Kenworth prime mover assembly plant with more than 50 years of experience
- The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck assembly plant with more than 10 years in Baja Californian grounds.
Both plants benefit from highly qualified manpower, immediate access to the west coast markets of the United States of America, an extensive supply network, and competitive costs. For these reasons, the plants' quality standards stand out in the market.
The spare parts industry embraces the end-consumer goods that are utilized to provide the terminal automotive industry (assemblers). This industry also supplies refurbishments for used automobiles.
In Mexico, the spare parts industry follows the same orientation as the automotive industry as a whole, achieving an historical 2.8 million units sold in 2012, representing a growth of 12.7% compared to the numbers achieved in 2011.
There are more than 80 companies in Baja California in the sector, classified as Tier 1, 2, and 3 production levels based on their manufacture levels, production sophistication, component specialization, and end clients. With a labor force superior to 30,000 employments, the auto parts companies in Baja California have a strong presence.
It is worth mentioning that there is a Linkage Committee between Universities, State Technical Schools, and companies in this economic branch, in order to attend the industry's demands, designing educational programs in more than 120 universities and state technical schools with more than 20,000 students in engineering and technical specialties.
