Highways

Road infrastructure in Baja California has been improving constantly over the past few years. Mexicali is the closest connection point in Baja California to the rest of the country. Federal Highway 2 can take you from Mexicali to Tijuana (to the west) and all the way to Mexico City and (east, then south). This Federal Highway can connect you to the entire Mexican highway network and take you to every city in the country.

Baja California’s highway network consist of 2, 774 Km paved and 8, 355 Km unpaved. The 5 main cities, in which 92% of the population and 95% of the economic activity are concentrated, are communicated by a modern 4 lanes highway.

These highways meet at the border crossing points with the main North American highways, having a dynamic fluid of load transport. Also, these highways connect to the main port of the state, the Port of Ensenada.

Foreign companies have the right to use their own transport for product transportation that come or are sent to the US.

Mexico highway system - Mexicali

Tijuana is the closest point connection to the Port of Ensenada in Baja California and the Ports of Long Beach and San Diego in California.

The highway system in Mexico consists of both, toll roads and free roads. In almost every route there is an option to take the toll or the free road, but there are some exceptions.

There are some Mexican regulations that have to be followed in order to be able to transport goods by truck on Mexican highways. NOM-068-SCT-2000 has to be followed to comply with these regulations

Mexicali

Commercial Border Crossing

Road infrastructure within the city and concerning the Heavy Industry Corridor will be as follows for the year 2010.

Road infrastructure in Mexicali 2010 will include a road that can take trucks from the Heavy Industry Corridor to the west (Tijuana) or the east (towards Mexico City and inner country) without having to go into the city.

The current road goes into only one part of the city if you are going to the inner country. Black lines in the map show the road infrastructure within the city. Trucks wanting to export will have to take this route. Although this means that trucks will have to go into the city they will only transit roads at city limits, not affecting inner-city traffic.

There is another border crossing for Tourist and minor commerce in the Mexicali Valley, 45 minutes to the east.

Tijuana

Tijuana has two border crossings:

  • San Ysidro Border Crossing: tourist border crossing connecting directly to Interstate 5 and 805.
  • Mesa de Otay: this is a commercial border crossing connecting to Highway 905 which is 20 minutes away from Interstate 5 and 805.

A third border crossing is planned in the east of the city, between Tijuana and the city of Tecate.

Baja California – California highway conections

The cities of Tijuana and Mexicali offer excellent road connections to the seaports of Ensenada and Long Beach, CA. as well as road connections to the entire U.S.A. and to the rest of Mexico.
Mexicali connects to Calexico trough two of its three border crossings (tourist and commercial). Highway 97, 111 connects you in 5-10 minutes to Highway 8, which runs across the USA from west to east (connecting to highway 10). From this highway you can connect to any other highway that can lead you to any city in the USA and Canada.

Tijuana connects to Interstate 8 (heading east) and Interstate 5 (heading north), offering connections to any place in the USA and Canada. A connection to Mexicali on Highway 2, by a toll or free road, offers connection to the rest of Mexico.
